4/11/18 - Wilbur and Orville Wright

AUTHOR'S NOTE: i was 10 when i wrote this. if i recall correctly, we each chose a person on the front of a Who Was? book to write a report on, and then we read the book we chose on our own so we could actually learn about the person/people.

WILBUR AND ORVILLE WRIGHT

.

Wilbur and Orville Wright were very important men in history as they invented something very important to human nature: the airplane.

Really, life would have been VERY different without airplanes, but that's a whole 'nother story. Anyways! On to childhood. The Wright brothers were two of seven children born to Milton Wright, who lived from 1828 to 1917, and Susan Catherine Koerner, who lived from 1831 to 1889. Wilbur was born near Millville, Indiana, in 1867, and Orville was born in Dayton, Ohio, in 1871. The other Wright siblings were Reuchlin (1861–1920), Lorin (1862–1939), and Katharine (1874–1929). Twins Otis and Ida, born 1870, died in infancy. (before 1872.) One day, in 1878, their father brought home a toy helicopter for his two younger sons. That day changed everything.

When their father brought home the toy helecopter, they really grew to like it! They played with it until it BROKE!!! And then they made a new one. If Wilbur and Orville's dad hadn't brought home that toy, they might not have been intrested in flying!

Before they made airplanes, they made bicycles, but that's just a little something to know. On to airplanes! Wilbur actually incorrectly believed a tail was not necessary. Here are the dimensions of the 1900 glider that they made:

        Wingspan: 17 ft 6 in (5.33 m) Wing area: 165 sq ft (15 m2) Chord: 5 ft (2 m) Chord: 1/20 Camber: 3.5:1        Aspect ratio        Length: 11 ft 6 in (3.51 m)Weight: 52 lb (24 kg)

So, you can just look up the the stuff for the 1901 and '02 and wikipedia, cuz i dont want to use more than 3 pages. So on to the first airplane.

In 1903 the brothers built the powered Wright Flyer I, using their preferred material for construction, spruce, a strong and lightweight wood, and Pride of the West muslin for surface coverings. Wilbur won a coin toss and made a three-second flight attempt on December 14, 1903, stalling after takeoff and causing minor damage to the Flyer. (The airplane's name.) Now let's fast forward a little bit, shall we? Wilbur started the fourth and last flight at just about 12 o'clock. The distance over the ground was measured to be 852 feet; the time of the flight was 59 seconds. The frame supporting the front rudder was badly broken, but the main part of the machine was not injured at all. After the men hauled the Flyer back from its fourth flight, a powerful gust of wind flipped it over several times, despite the crew's attempt to hold it down. Severely damaged, the airplane never flew again. The brothers shipped it home, and years later Orville restored it, lending it to several U.S. locations for display, then to a British museum, before it was finally installed in 1948 in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., its current residence.

And now, what you've allllll been waiting for, a picture of the wright flyer!!!

Well, thats about it! but just 1 more fact before i leave. Neither brother EVER married! Bye now!
